Fairfield, CA - Last Friday, January 18, 2024, students from Fairfield High School's Automotive II class took on an exciting project – building an electric car. Using a kit provided by The Switch Lab, these students continued the work initiated by their peers in the previous year's class. It's all part of their Automotive II course, an advanced program that delves into the intricacies of fixing cars, understanding new technologies, and preparing for the future.
The selected students, all enrolled in the Automotive II class, were chosen because of their keen interest in electric vehicles. Working together, they diligently followed instructions to piece together an electric car designed for real-world use.
Gary St. Vincent, the teacher leading the Automotive II class, shared his perspective on why he introduced this project to his students. "I thought it would be a great experience for my students to work on building an electric car. With more cars transitioning to electric power, it's crucial for them to learn about these new technologies and how to contribute to a more sustainable future."
The Automotive II course at Fairfield High School stands out for its blend of classroom instruction and hands-on experiences. Beyond the assembly of the electric car, students in this program receive comprehensive education covering topics such as tune-up, emission control, power transmission, brakes, machine operations, diagnostics, computer controls, suspension, steering, fuel systems, and engine overhaul.
