Fairfield, CA - Students from Sheldon Academy have stepped up to lead efforts in keeping their neighborhood clean and tidy. Inspired by the school's commitment to community engagement, Principal Lisa Lewis tasked Dale Alexander, the student council advisor, with finding ways for the student council to contribute to community service.

Encouraged by this directive, Alexander proposed the idea of adopting a street. The Sheldon Student Council then collaborated with Fairfield's Adopt A Street program and selected Woolner Avenue as their designated area for cleanup efforts.

But what does it mean to "adopt" a street? Established in 2018, Fairfield's Adopt A Street initiative empowers groups and individuals to take ownership of maintaining a designated street. Over the years, 50 streets across Fairfield have been adopted by various groups. Participants in the program receive essential cleaning tools from the City's Public Works Department, including grabber sticks, large trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and goggles.

The inaugural cleanup initiative on Woolner Avenue was a resounding success with 30 enthusiastic students actively participating. These students were eager to give back to their community and take responsibility for maintaining the street they traverse daily to reach school. Their collective efforts not only enhance the appearance of their neighborhood but also instill a sense of pride and civic responsibility among these young volunteers.

Principal Lisa Lewis shared her thoughts on the success of the event, saying, "It's fantastic to see our students come together for a common cause. Their enthusiasm and commitment to keeping our community clean is inspiring. We're already looking forward to our next cleanup event and continuing to make a positive impact."
