Fairfield, CA - On April 18, 2024, Fairfield High School welcomed students, families, and community members to its third annual Science Night, a vibrant event showcasing the hard work and creativity of 9th and 10th-grade science students. This science-themed museum and activity night featured projects from Living Earth Biology, Chemistry of the Earth, and Honors Chemistry of the Earth students.

Throughout a six-week project-based unit, Living Earth Biology students delved into the unique organisms of the Galapagos Islands, studying their physical characteristics and how these traits enable survival in their environment. These 9th graders constructed evidence-based explanations for how their chosen organisms evolved over time, taking into account changes in the environment and the complex interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. This approach aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which encourage students to think and act like scientists.

Over a three-week period, Honors Earth Chemistry students examined geological wonders, investigating the earth processes that led to their formation and considering human interactions with these sites. Their research culminated in detailed discussions with visitors, complemented by models and information boards illustrating their findings.

For six weeks, Earth Chemistry students conducted a comprehensive study of the periodic table and its elements. Each student selected an element to research, analyzing its physical and chemical properties and how these relate to its position on the periodic table and its chemical group.

More than 670 Fairfield High School 9th and 10th graders collaborated to construct poster boards, interactive slideshows, and 3D models from recycled materials, showcasing their research to over 375 community members in attendance. The event attracted families, friends, and even incoming 9th-grade students from across the district, who were invited to experience the innovative exhibits spread across three classrooms, the gymnasium, and the library. To add to the festive atmosphere, attendees also enjoyed a food truck court offering a variety of snacks and refreshments.

Rebecca Campion, Fairfield High School principal, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, saying, "Science Night is an incredible opportunity for our students to share their knowledge and creativity with the community. It’s amazing to see the level of engagement and curiosity this event sparks. The projects and exhibits truly reflect the talent and dedication of our students and staff."
