Fairfield, CA - This November, the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD) will have five Board trustee seats open for election in Trustee Areas: 1, 2, 3, 6, and a two-year term for Area 7. To assist prospective candidates, the Fairfield-Suisun Governance Subcommittee will host an informational meeting on Tuesday, July 30th, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the FSUSD Central Office, 2490 Hilborn Road, Fairfield.

The informational session, led by current Governance Subcommittee members, is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of a Governing Board Trustee. This session is crucial for those considering running for a seat and will offer insights into the critical aspects of board service.

 Topics to be covered include:

  • Student Achievement and Local Control and Accountability Goals

  • Collective Governance: Acting as one body, not as seven individuals

  • The Brown Act: The importance of holding conversations only in public meetings

  • Board/Superintendent Relationship: Working as a Governance Team

  • Leadership: Doing your homework, attending meetings, and involvement in schools/events

  • School Finance: Navigating State and Federal funding

  • Collective Bargaining: Understanding FSUSD’s four employee associations and their representatives

The session will also include a Q&A segment, allowing attendees to engage with current Board members and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to serve on the FSUSD Board.

To qualify as a candidate, individuals must meet several mandated requirements: they must be at least 18 years old, residents of the trustee area, registered voters, and not employed by FSUSD. Although elected by their respective areas, trustees work collectively to provide governance for the entire district, impacting the education of over 20,000 students and supporting more than 2,000 employees.

A map of FSUSD Trustee areas can be found on the district website (www.fsusd.org) under the Governing Board tab. Residents can visit https://www.solanocounty.com/depts/rov/ and input their address to determine their trustee area or call the voter registrar's office at (707) 784-6675.

FSUSD encourages all interested individuals to attend the informational meeting on July 30th. Please contact the Superintendent’s office at (707) 399-5008 to confirm your attendance so that appropriate seating and materials can be prepared for all attendees.
