Fairfield, CA – On Wednesday, September 18, families from the community gathered at B. Gale Middle School for a special event focused on enhancing family communication skills. Hosted by the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD), the Strengthening Families event was part of the district’s ongoing efforts to support family engagement and wellness.

The evening included interactive sessions designed to improve communication within families. Adults participated in workshops facilitated by Solano Office of Education (SCOE) Mental Health and Wellness clinicians, gaining practical skills to foster open dialogue and build stronger family connections. The sessions were offered in both English and Spanish to ensure accessibility for all participants.

“Effective communication is a cornerstone of strong families and mental wellness,” said Dr. Veneisha Johnson, Clinical Services Supervisor with SCOE. “By helping families enhance their communication, we are contributing to healthier relationships and a stronger community.”

Youth attendees engaged in creative activities led by Solano Behavioral Health, including painting and art projects that encouraged self-expression.

Holly Collins, FSUSD Coordinator of Parent and Family Engagement, shared her enthusiasm for the event’s success: "This event provided families with valuable tools for improving communication and connecting with one another. We are excited to continue our partnership with SCOE and Solano Behavioral Health to offer more resources and events that support our families."

The event was made possible in part by a grant awarded to SCOE by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The ReCast (Resilience and Community After Stress and Trauma) grant aims to support local communities by improving behavioral health, reducing trauma, and fostering sustainable community change through collaboration and empowerment.
