Fairfield, CA – A gift of friendship is making its way from Fairfield to Los Angeles, courtesy of Cordelia Hills Elementary School.
Third graders at Cordelia Hills came together to create more than 200 friendship bracelets to send to students in Los Angeles who have been impacted by the recent wildfires.
"We heard about the kids losing their schools, so we made friendship bracelets to cheer them up,” Cordelia Hills student Truman Nelson said, adding, “I think it will make them smile."
The effort is part of the Friendship4Kids campaign, which put out a call for support and donations via social media in mid-January.
According to the Friendship4Kids Instagram, the group is working with schools in Los Angeles and Pasadena to distribute donations of friendship bracelets and other comfort items. According to news reports, about a dozen K-12 schools in the Los Angeles area were destroyed or damaged, and many other schools were impacted by smoke and other factors.
"Friendship4Kids aims to provide kids affected by the fires (with) a small comfort item to show them they have friendship," the group shared via Instagram.
Third grade teacher Debbie Stone coordinated the friendship bracelet effort at Cordelia Hills.
"As soon as I heard that someone was coordinating a friendship bracelet collection for students who lost their schools in the LA fires, I knew my students would want to participate,” she said. “Our entire third grade team got involved, and we have worked together to successfully create 220 bracelets to spread friendship and kindness to the students affected."
