Fairfield, CA - Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD) in partnership with California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is thrilled to announce the successful completion of the 2024 Career Expedition Summer Camp. Now in its second year, this innovative program offered 24 seventh-grade students from schools throughout FSUSD an exciting glimpse into maritime careers and college life at Cal Maritime.
The five-day, overnight camp took place from June 9 to June 14 on the Cal Maritime campus. Interested seventh-grade students applied by submitting an essay detailing their motivation for attending. The selection process ensured that the camp was attended by highly motivated and enthusiastic students.
Cal Maritime provided state-of-the-art facilities and expert instruction, including training in basic firefighting and personal survival skills. One of the highlights was the opportunity for students to experience a cutting-edge boat simulator, which provided realistic training scenarios in a controlled environment. Students completed courses in basic Marine Firefighting and Personal Survival, receiving certificates upon completion.
Valerie Miner, an FSUSD middle school teacher who attended the camp as a counselor, highlighted the camp's value: "The Cal Maritime Expedition Summer Camp gives students a firsthand look at college life and careers in the maritime industry. They learn essential survival skills, explore marine science and engineering, and gain experience in marine firefighting. These activities broaden their horizons and introduce them to potential future careers."
The camp concluded with a special presentation where students shared their experiences and achievements. The event featured a photo slideshow and a video recap of the week's highlights. The video is available to view here.
