Fairfield, CA - Fifteen students from both Sem Yeto sites in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD) were given a unique opportunity this semester as they delved into the world of Advanced Manufacturing at Solano Community College (SCC). The students, selected for the inaugural Career Technical Education (CTE) course, attended classes four days a week at the SCC Fairfield campus, immersing themselves in the study of Mechatronics under the guidance of Professor Douglas Green.
The Mechatronics course, designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the role of technology in our lives, covered basic science and math concepts. The curriculum explored mechatronic systems commonly found in the industry, focusing on their principles of operation, histories, and relationships to one another. The highlight of the semester was a hands-on project that involved building boxing robots, showcasing the students' skills in robotics, mechanics, and engineering.
“The students enjoyed building different items and putting together the robots with their classmates, as well as learning about the many different career options available if they continue the mechatronics program at SCC,” said Stephanie Stewart, a College and Career Tech.
James Hightower, Principal of Sem Yeto, expressed his pride in the students' accomplishments. "This opportunity at Solano Community College has opened doors for our students, providing them with a hands-on learning experience that goes beyond the traditional classroom setting," said Hightower.
The success of this semester has set the stage for the program's expansion, with five of the fifteen students continuing the Mechatronics program next semester, joined by fifteen new students eager to explore the Advanced Manufacturing field. FSUSD extends its gratitude for the invaluable dual enrollment partnership with Solano Community College, providing our students with enriching opportunities in higher education and emerging fields.
