Fairfield, CA – Beginning in early November, classes at Rolling Hills Elementary School began collecting canned food and other non-perishable items for the Rolling Hills Annual Food Drive. Every year, students and staff from Rolling Hills Elementary compete to see which class can donate the most items to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano County.
Last year, Rolling Hills Elementary School donated 4,456 pounds of nonperishable food items amounting to almost 4,000 meals for those in need. This year’s competition began on November 9th and ended on December 2nd. Although the weight of this year’s contributions has not yet been totaled, the winning class donated over 519 food items. The classes from each grade level who contributed the most won a class popcorn party sponsored by the Rolling Hills Elementary Parent Teacher Association.
Dr. Danny Gentry, Principal at Rolling Hills Elementary School, said, “Rolling Hills is one of the founding schools of the Great Kindness Challenge and takes every opportunity to spread kindness.”
The Great Kindness Challenge is a global campaign that promotes kindness in kindergarten through grade twelve schools. It is a positive, action-based bullying-prevention initiative that creates a school culture of kindness, compassion, unity, and respect.
“This year we are focusing on the character trait of gratitude, the Rolling Hills Annual Food Drive has been an excellent chance for our school community to reflect on how grateful we are,” said Principal Danny Gentry.
