FAIRFIELD, CA - On Thursday, May 4, 2023, KI Jones Elementary hosted the Elementary Battle of the Books 2023, an annual competition celebrating reading and critical thinking skills. The event was open to all 4th and 5th-grade students in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD), over 330 students participated in site battles. Over fifty students participated in the district event, including students from the Virtual Academy via Google Meet.
The Elementary battle of the Books is a beloved tradition in FSUSD, and it returned in the 2017-18 school year with the restoration of elementary teacher librarian services. Elementary itinerant teacher librarians promote, coach, and run their site battles over the course of the school year. Students in 4th and 5th grade signed up to read six books over the course of five months.
The winning teams from each site battle represented their school in the District Battle on May 4, 2023. The event was a resounding success, with KI Jones Elementary emerging as the District Champion for 2023.
"We are thrilled to see so many students participate in the Elementary Battle of the Books 2023," said Kris Corey, Superintendent of FSUSD.
