Fairfield, CA - At the October meeting of the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District student leaders, 31 student representatives from schools throughout the district provided a student voice to aid in shaping district policy regarding school climate and culture and student discipline.
FSUSD has been actively engaging students and parents through monthly Student Leader and Parent Leader meetings. These meetings with the superintendent and designated staff serve as a conduit for bringing vital perspectives to the forefront of essential district decisions, including matters related to school safety, curriculum, climate, and even school menus.
The most recent Student and Parent Leader meeting revolved around the themes of school climate, culture, and student discipline. District staff presented the student leaders with data sourced from FSUSD student surveys, shedding light on student perceptions of school climate and discipline. Additionally, attendees were provided with insights into recent legislation that impacts the future of student discipline. The meeting featured open discussions where student leaders expressed their personal opinions and shared their own experiences related to discipline and school climate on their respective campuses.
The student leaders each provided a unique perspective on what they have seen, heard about, or experienced on their own campuses. They then offered suggestions about what schools, students, and parents can do to positively affect school climate, culture, and discipline for students throughout the district.
"These Student Leader and Parent Leader meetings are integral to our commitment to student-centered decision-making. We firmly believe that students and parents play a crucial role in shaping the educational environment. Their perspectives, insights, and experiences are invaluable, especially when it comes to improving school climate and discipline policies."
